INSTALLING GENTEX MIRROR WITH EXISTING FORD SYNC SYSTEM
This process will void any warranty on the original mirror.
To retain the factory Ford SYNC system while installing a Gentex rearview mirror you must first find out what kind of SYNC system you have. This process can only be done with the SYNC system with the activation button outside of the mirror, i.e. on the steering wheel or dash panel. The factory Ford system must NOT have factory navigation, with this system; both the SYNC microphone and the navigation microphone are in the mirror and can make installation much more difficult if not impossible.
First you must remove the mirror from the windshield and unplug.
Second you must dismantle the mirror. This is accomplished by removing the trim piece on the reflective side of the housing. PLEASE BE AWARE that once you choose to remove the trim piece, you must be committed to the install. It is VERY possible and likely for you to break the trim piece when it is being removed.
Once the outside trim is removed, you will see the interior pieces of the mirror itself. You are after the actual circuit board of the mirror; this is what houses the SYNC microphone. The circuit board is the only piece of the mirror you will need. The SYNC microphone is a plastic tube which is attached to the circuit board by a white 4-Pin connector. These wires from the connector must be extended in order for the microphone to be exposed on the outside of the headliner.
Once the wires for the microphone are extended, you can now find a place for the circuit board to be re-plugged in and hidden as well as a place to attach the microphone so it can clearly pick up the drivers voice. The circuit board can be hidden up in the headliner as long as you cover it well so it will not have a chance to ground out on the metal roof. This is the most common place for it to be hidden. If you would like to find a different place to hide the board, more extensions must be made to accommodate for the extra travel.
Once all of these steps have been done, and the mirror circuit board has been plugged back in with the existing factory plug, everything should work like it was from the factory. If there is a problem, please check all connections and wiring. Make sure circuit board is not in contact with any metal and the plug is correctly connected.
If all works well, please continue to normal installation of your mirror.
